ALU Power 125 set or reel: the Australian price crossover
Compare the actual 12.2 m Luxilon ALU Power 125 set and 220 m reel, matched at 1.25 mm. Separate purchase cost, cutting allowance and installed restringing.
Updated:

1. The reel crosses the set price at thirteen purchases
At Wilson Australia on 30 October 2026, the Luxilon ALU Power 125 set was A$39.95 and the corresponding reel was A$479.95. Twelve sets cost A$479.40, which is A$0.55 less than the reel; thirteen sets cost A$519.35, which is A$39.40 more. On those goods-only amounts, the reel becomes the lower purchase cost when the alternative is buying thirteen of these sets. That is a purchasing comparison, not a promise of thirteen completed string jobs.
Choose a set when you need one restring, are still deciding whether this particular string suits your setup, or your stringer does not accept customer-supplied reels. A reel can make sense for repeated use of this exact formulation and gauge after the stringer confirms usable cut lengths, labour and storage arrangements. No tension, comfort, injury-prevention or measured playing-life recommendation is made here.
2. Match the formulation and diameter before comparing length
Both checked Australian listings identify ALU Power 125, gauge 17 and 1.25 mm diameter. Their manufacturer formulation descriptions match. The selected single set has SKU WRZ995100SI and a published length of 12.2 m; the reel is WRZ990100SI and 220 m. These are the actual lengths in this comparison. A generic 200 m reel assumption would produce a different answer.
The real package photograph illustrates why the label must be read: it shows a separate DISCHO Synpower 12 m, 1.30 mm set beside a Pro's Pro Nano Cyber Power 200 m, 1.25 mm reel. Those photographed products are different formulations and diameters and are not the priced Luxilon pair. The photograph explains label inspection and supply formats; it does not supply the Luxilon specifications. No exact photograph of either current Luxilon retail package was verified.

3. Purchase totals and price per metre answer different questions
Dividing the item prices by the published lengths gives approximately A$3.27 per metre for the set and A$2.18 per metre for the reel. The reel therefore costs less per nominal metre, while requiring the larger A$479.95 purchase. Price per metre alone does not tell an occasional player whether the unused length is worth buying.
The twelve-set and thirteen-set totals use the same A$39.95 amount for each purchased set. They are not discounted bulk offers or a completed postcode-specific checkout. Delivery, any separate handling charge and the stringer's labour or supplied-string surcharge need their own confirmed quote. An unverified charge is not treated as zero. Current stock and order conditions can change after the observation date.
| Comparison | Result | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 12 sets × A$39.95 | A$479.40 | A$0.55 below the reel item amount |
| 13 sets × A$39.95 | A$519.35 | A$39.40 above the reel item amount |
| A$39.95 ÷ 12.2 m | About A$3.27/m | Nominal set length, not installed cost |
| A$479.95 ÷ 220 m | About A$2.18/m | Nominal reel length, not job yield |
4. A reel length is not a guaranteed restring count
If every cut were exactly 12.2 m, 220 m would permit eighteen such cuts with 0.4 m remaining: 18 × 12.2 = 219.6 m. This is an explicit length-planning example, rather than a verified yield for your racket. Frame pattern, one-piece or two-piece requirements, machine reach, tie-offs and the stringer's required allowance can change the usable cut length. Ask for the requirement for your exact frame and method before cutting.
The separate drop-weight machine photograph shows the physical stringing equipment and clamps for this discussion; it is not a setup instruction, a tension recommendation or proof of compatibility with any frame. The third photograph shows a broken cross string as a real replacement event. It does not establish that the string is ALU Power, how long it lasted, or how frequently you will need another job. Do not turn the example cut count into a cost-per-season or durability claim.

5. Confirm the stringer's complete quote before buying
Give your stringer the exact frame, ALU Power 125 formulation, 1.25 mm diameter and chosen supply format. Confirm whether they accept your own set or reel, the required length for each job, labour and any extra charge. Ask how unused reel material will be identified and returned or stored. Keep the original package identity with the remaining string so a later job is not supplied from an unidentified roll.
Then compare the current Australian order amount and the confirmed installed quote. Use the existing site planning tools only for their stated inputs; none measures your machine allowance or approves a tension. If you cannot confirm repeated use and the actual stringing arrangement, the smaller set purchase avoids committing to unused reel length. The arithmetic supports a purchase decision once those practical conditions are known; it does not replace them.
